Paberist is a name of our medium for presenting creative ideas and artworks we produce together.
Paberist in Estonian means “made of paper” and “about paper”.So the outcome on this website can be a collection of graphic series or a notebook or any other project that starts from a sketch or sentence on a sheet of paper.
We are Estonian artist couple Mariliis and Tõnis Kenkmaa. Our collective journey began in 2012 when we decided to apply to a popular art gallery in Tallinn Old Town and our project was accepted.
We were part of Estonian Art Academy’s printmaking department back then where we discovered a very similar taste in visual world and the way of thinking about environments surrounding us.
It has been the minimalistic black and white aesthetics that has inspired us making the artworks we do.
Together with the minimalist visual approach we wanted to add conceptually triggering titles and produce the artworks in the very classical printmaking techniques like silk-screen print, etching, lino-cut etc.
Our first exhibition “Prophecy Of Nothingness” (in Hobusepea Gallery, Tallinn 2013) was a prolific project as we were able to fill the gallery walls with 51 framed prints. All works having their individual story and title.
The making of this exhibition introduced us to a unique level of collaborative creativity and guided us towards quality and conceptuality of an artwork.
This was the proof for us that together we can do everything.
